Saturday was Mockingbird night in Mobile.
The Monroeville troupe that performs a stage adaptation of Harper Lee's classic, To Kill a Mockingbird, brought its collective talent to the Saenger Theater in Mobile. I was happy to serve as the Master of Ceremonies for the show, which was a benefit for Westminster Village in Spanish Fort. The hundreds of theater-lovers had a chance to see not only the play, but to hear from the actress who played Scout in the movie adaptation, Mary Badham. In response to questions from the audience, she said it was a joy to work with Gregory Peck, who played Atticus Finch in the movie. Even though she was just a little girl at the time of the movie, she said the veteran actor always treated her like an equal. She travels around the world to talk about the book and the film, and the positive effect they had on her life.
Her one regret is the fact that she has never had the chance to thank Harper Lee in person for the work she brought to life. (It is my regret that Ms. Lee doesn't like to talk with reporters, but that's another story :)
It was great to see many of the actors whom my wife and I had met when we traveled to Monroeville a few months ago to see the production there.
If you have the opportunity to see the play, take advantage of it. While the cast is made of lawyers, county commissioners, newspaper reporters, students and even a coroner, they play their parts so convincingly that it is hard to believe they are not professional actors.
When the tickets go on sale, don't hesitate. They sell out in a flash.
