Since I am a part-time instructor at Spring Hill College, I receive e-mails addressed to faculty and staff.  One that I received today caught my eye.

It involves the appearance on campus of a professor of anthropology from the University of California, Irvine, Dr. Leo Chavez.  He is speaking on the topic, "The Latino Threat:  How the media constructs what we think about Latino immigrants". His appearance coincides with a book he is selling.

As you might imagine, my back arches a bit every time someone tries to blame the media for, well, you name it.  We are easy targets since we never seem to fight back.

So, I replied to the author of the invitation, Sister Patty Huffman, DC, asking if a representative of the media would be there to provide some balance.   It sounds like a fair thing to do at a college, to expose those attending to all sides of an argument.

The reply I received said, "Not sure if they will be or not".

I guess that means no one was invited to rebut the professor.

Let's see.  A speaker complaining about bias is allowed a forum that, because of the lack of balance, promotes bias.

You might be thinking, "Well Bob, they're not talking about YOU."  But when someone paints with such a broad brush, well, yes they are.
