Since the Fox 10 studios moved west, I don't get to downtown Mobile as much as I did before.  This weekend, I spent a considerable amount of time downtown.  It was a mixed bag..

Sunday night, my wife and I joined John Edd and his wife, and Jason Smith and his wife as guests of the USA Children's and Women's Hospital.  All of us, as well as other folks from Fox 10 and hospital volunteers were honored at a reception at Cafe 615 for our participation in this year's Children's Miracle Network Telethon, which aired on Fox 10 in early June.  It was a great dinner.  The folks at USA always make us feel appreciated.

Saturday night, we met at a friend's home to honor a young man we've known for a long time who just got his "wings" as a Marine pilot.  The young First Lieutenant, an Annapolis grad, will be flying Cobra helicopters.

Those were the good parts of the downtown weekend.

About a half hour after we left the party in an attractive part of midtown, one of the pilot's young friends was robbed at gunpoint by some men in a black SUV, practically in front of the house! At last word, police hadn't found the suspects.

Secondly, I could see why more folks don't venture to downtown Mobile at night.  As we were leaving Cafe 615 and heading east on Dauphin Street, I noticed how incredibly dark it was.  The city either needs to install more street lights in downtown, or make the lights that are there, brighter.
