Hussein is getting more liberal by the minute with Joe Biden by his side. Why aren't the sheeple that are voting for this dud get it? The only reasons why people vote for this thing is because he is black and making promises to the nare do wells that the govornment will give them even more for free. I for one am not happy about either of the candidates and a two party system, but I do have sense enough to know that he doesn't have near the experience or intellect to run this country. I am sick and tired of welfare and people that do not take drug tests getting my money and sitting on their lazy tails! The people that see change will see only that in their pockets, for higher taxes on the working people are on the way. Hussein is the typical liberal in that higher taxes are their original idea on getting money for their dumpy programs. The sheep in the unions are going to do as they are told and they'll vote for this idiot, too. Do you really think he is going to save your over-priced job? When it comes to cutting jobs, they will just shut it down and move somewhere else and leave you high and dry anyway. Health Care? Who do you think is going to pay for all of this? The middle class, that's who! Taxes run programs and taxes come from working people that don't have time to sit around and complain about not getting enough hand-outs from the govornment. Profit windfall taxes, oh there is a way to lower gas prices. Who do you think the oil companies are going to pass on the costs to? Us, the consumer. Where does the windfall tax end? If you get a large settlement or inheritance, or a small buisness has a banner year, is that windfall profit? How do you tax capitalism like that? You can't because this country is a free market society, that is until Hussein takes over and saves us all. At least the Republican way of things lets us earn our money and gives America a back bone for once. That will all CHANGE I'm sure. In closing, garbage begets garbage, and that is exactly who is voting for what they are going to get.

Little Known Heros of the Revolution
The Boston Massacre
March 5th 1770. The Boston Massacre....Crispus Attucks was not only the First American Martyr of the Revolution, he was also the Organizer and leader of the Crowd that confronted the British Soldiers at Boston that day. He was also the Formost in Resisting the British Soldiers and as a result the First one Killed.
In 1851 there was a Petition presented to the Massachusetts Legislature for the appropriation of Funds to build a Monument to the First American Martyr of the Revolution, Crispus Attucks. The Petition was denied.
On the 5th of March, 1776, Washington repaired to the intrenchments. "Remember," said he, "it is the 5th of March, and avenge the death of your brethren!"
The Battle of Bunker Hill
June 17th 1775, The Battle of Bunker Hill. Patriots after surronding the City of Boston, took up postions on the Charlestown Peninsula on top of Bunker Hill and Breed's Hill North of town across the Bay. During this battle between 1,500 American Patriots and 2,400 British Soliders took part. While the British did take both Hills they suffered Heavy losses. British casualties were about 1,150 killed and wounded, while the Patriots suffered 450 Killed and wounded.
But out of those who died 2 famous People were Killed in the Fighting. A Patriot named General Warren and a British Major of Marines Pitcarin. The Little known Hero is the Man who Killed Major Pitcarin was named Henry Hill. After the Battle he was was presented to General Washington for his heroic Fighting and the killing of the Major. In Pictures made of the Battle he was at First a Prominent Figure, but over time he has been forgotten and ingloriously left out.
Henry Hill also fought in the battles of Lexington, Brandywine, Monmouth, Princeton, and Yorktown. He died in Chilicothe, on the 12th of August, 1833, aged eighty years. He was buried with the honors of war and eventually forgotten to History.
Dorchester Heights
On March 4th, 1776 Boston. Washington received 59 Cannon from the Captured British fort of Ticondaroga. Overnight the Patriots Constructed Fortifications and installed the Cannon on the Heights overlooking British occupied Boston. This move eventually led to the British evacutaion of Boston on March 17th, 1776. March 17 is celebrated as Evacuation Day in some Massachusetts communities.
But one Little known Hero is James Easton. James Easton, of Bridgewater, was one who participated in the erection of the fortifications on Dorchester Heights, under command of Washington. His talents were invaluable in the Construciton of the fortifications.
Mr. Easton was a manufacturing blacksmith, and his forge and nail factory, where were he also made edge tools and anchors, was extensively known, for its superiority of workmanship. Much of the iron work for the Tremont Theatre and Boston Marine Railway was executed under his supervision. Mr. Easton was self-educated. When a young man, stipulating for work, he always provided for chances of evening study. He was welcome to the business circles of Boston as a man of strict integrity, and the many who resorted to him for advice in complicated matters styled him "the Lawyer." His sons, Caleb, Joshua, Sylvanus, and Hosea, inherited his mechanical genius and mental ability.
Crossing of the Delaware
December 25th, 1776 Trenton. In a daring tactic, General Washington in the Dead of Winter decide to attack the town of Trenton. In the middle of the night and during a snow storm the Patriots crossed the Delaware River and then attacked the Hessian Mercenaries and British Troops occuping the Town. It was an absolute and complete Victory.
A Little known Hero was Oliver Cromwell. He enlisted in company commanded by Capt. Lowery, attached to the Second New Jersey Regiment, under the command of Col. Israel Shreve. He was at the battles of Trenton, Princeton, Brandywine, Monmouth, and Yorktown. Cromwell was brought up a farmer, having served his time with Thomas Hutchins, Esq., his maternal uncle. He was, for six years and nine months, under the immediate command of Washington, whom he loved affectionately. "His discharge "at the close of the war, was in Washington's own hand-writing, of which he was very proud, often speaking of it. He received, annually, ninety-six dollars pension. He lived a long and honorable life. He lost three sons and three daughters; had fourteen children who reached the age of maturity--seven sons and seven daughters. He saw his grand-children to the third generation. He was a man of strong natural powers--never chewed tobacco nor drank a glass of ardent spirit. He died, in the town of his birth, January 24th, 1853.
There is another little known Hero at the Crossing. Prince Whipple was a Body Guard to General Whipple of New Hampshire, who was an Aid to General Washington. In the Engraving done of the Night of December 25th 1776, Prince Whipple can be seen Proudly riding Horseback, next to General Washington and General Whipple. More Modern Artist's failed to add him to other renditions of that Glorious Night.
Prince was beloved by all who knew him. He was the "Caleb Quotem" of Portsmouth, where, he died at the age of thirty-two, leaving a widow and children.
The Spy of Lafayette
One Little known hero is James Armistead Lafayette. James was a man who Volunteered his service to General Lafayette of the Continential Army. So impressed with this Man General Lafayette asked him to be a Spy. Upon agreeing to this task, he was able to get himself employed by the British General Cornwallis. Cornwallis was also so impressed by him that he in turn, asked him to spy for the British Army. So James Armistead started Feeding the British false information till the Surrender of General Cornwallis. So perfect was the Acting of James that not until Cornwallis met James in the Headquarters tent of General Lafayette, did his true identity and mission become known to him. James was so fond of General Lafayette that he took his last name as a sign of his loyalty and appreciation. The Service provided by James and the success of his mission was immeasurable to the success over Cornwallis.
Americans All..
What some of you may have already figured out is that not only are these American Heros. But they are American Heros that happen to be African American. The reason for not including this earlier, is because it matters little what the Color of their skin was. All that matters is that they are Heros, American Heros that fought for not only Our Liberty and Freedom, but their Liberty and the Freedom of Future Generations.
The Continential Army was so integrated by the end of the Revolutionary War, 1/4th of it was made up of African Americans. The United States would not see this kind of integration again for another 200 years.
These are not all of the Hero's of the American Revolution, there are many more of many different Races and Sexes. But the Fact that they Fought and many died for all of us.....is what matters.
They Were...........We Are..............Americans All...

John Edwards has probably done a great deal of harm to his own family first, and then to his own political career as well. I was surprised to his replies when he was asked why?
He simply said that he had started feeling very special (and powerful) since he had gotten so much attention while running his campaign and getting the bright light treatment. I couldn't help but notice how much information that his response to the interviewer gave the general public. Actually bringing ideas of the movie "Absolute Power" as I tried to contrast his words actually boiling them down to the same reasons that Clinton had recounted, "just because I could."
What if he had made it to become the President of the United States and we had not known ahead of time about his ultra ego? What might he have done in secret just because he could? Now, that is a scarey thought!
Americans really need to know the next President and know how they will do when they are not being scripted. What is their past ideals that they will want to bring to this newly changing era? Do we want the same changes? Can the President himself do it alone without the aid of the Congress? Will this President allow a one party Congress spend all that they can force us to pay taxes on? Who will benefit from his changes? Will it be the people who actually pay the taxes or people who jump borders and find a new president who wants to change the way we accept extra burdens as taxpayers for the extra people among us? Will lower wages and inflation cause our country to split into only two groups, the educated and the poor? How will the lower class be treated then? How will the poor educate their children?
Edwards made his bed and now he has to lay in it. Perhaps he will be an attorney again afterall.

Why Fight for Liberty? Why take time out of Your Life to raise Your Voice against Tyranny? What reason is worth all the Time and Effort and if necessary, Blood to Stand in the Defense of Liberty?
Is it to rid ourselves of these Dishonest Politicians? No, for that is no Reason to stain the Land with Blood.....I Dislike these Wolves in Sheep's Clothing as much as anyone..but that alone is not worth war...
Is it to rid ourselves of Tyrannical Taxation? No...it is for something more substantial than our precious wallets....
What is it that a Man or Woman must Stand for Liberty, be it in Peaceful Protest or with Arms?
Is it for Our Rights? Our Rights that are Guaranteed in the Constitution?....Yes, but to stop there would be a Grave Injustice.
We must fight for the Liberty of All Mankind. For the Women,Children and Men who for themselves have no Voice.....Who can not Stand for themselves because their suffering is greater than Ours. For those that Oppose us and their Future Generations. So that there shall be No More Tyranny, at Home or Abroad. That a Few Tyrannical Men Can Not, Must Not, Dictate to Millions. So that wherever the Wind Blows or the Sun Shines People will have a say in who rules over them and by what laws they live. We Must Fight for the Rights given to us by Nature's God, for those Rights are Given to All, be them Friend or Foe. From the Poorest Drunk to the Wealthiest Businessman has the Right to Liberty......For this we Must Fight, For this we are Obligated to Fight....
We as the Nation of Freedom and Liberty have an Obligation to Ourselves, Our Children and to the World to Shine the Light of Liberty to All the Ends of the Earth....
THIS is what Our Founding Fathers Fought For........
For This Reason.....Liberty Must Survive...No Matter the Cost...
We Must Stand upon Our Rights, Not Upon the Force Of Arms........
But Let it Be known we Will Fight...with Words Peaceably...with Arms If Necessary...

If it's not Good for our Kids, then Why is it good for our Country?
Why do we Teach our kids that in order to succeed they need to be Self-Sufficient?
Why do we teach them how to be Independent and then vote for Politicians or Laws that take Independence away?
If we know that it's not a Formula for Success to keep Bailing our Kids out every time they screw up, then why do we encourage our Government to do so?
Why do we tell them they need to learn to do it themselves but then we turn to the Government to do things for us?
Why do we Believe in Tough Love for our Children...because we Love them..but then we bend like wet paper to the Will of Big Government?
Why do we not want our Kids to live at home when they are 40 but want the Government to "take care' of them for the rest of their lives?
Are we Good Parents and Lousy Citizens or Lousy Parents but Good Citizens?
If we want Success, Independence and Happiness for our Kids.....
Then why do we keep Encouraging Failure, Dependency and Misery in the Direction of our Government?
Do We Not Love Our Country As Much As We Love Our Children?
I Hope So......

A wise and frugal government, which shall restrain men from injuring one another, which shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned. This is the sum of good government, and this is necessary to close the circle of our felicity. Thomas Jefferson, First Inaugural Address.

"Posterity, you will never know how much it cost the present generation to preserve your freedom. I hope you will make good use of it. If you do not, I shall repent in heaven that ever I took half the pains to preserve it." John Adams
"The way to have safe government is not to trust it all to the one, but to divide it among the many, distributing to everyone exactly the functions in which he is competent....To let the National Government be entrusted with the defense of the nation, and it's foreign and federal relations..... The State Governments with the Civil Rights, Laws, Police and administration of what concerns the State generally. The Counties with the local concerns, and each ward direct the interests within itself. It is by dividing and subdividing these Republics from the great national one down through all it's subordinations until it ends in the administration of everyman's farm by himself, by placing under everyone what his own eye may superintend, that all will be done for the best." Thomas Jefferson
"We must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt. We must make our selection between economy and liberty or profusion and servitude. If we run into such debts as that we must be taxed in our meat in our drink, in our necessities and comforts, in our labors and in our amusements, for our callings and our creeds...our people.. must come to labor sixteen hours in the twenty-four, give earnings of fifteen of these to the government for their debts and daily expenses; and the sixteenth being insufficient to afford us bread, we must live.. We have not time to think, no means of calling the mis-managers to account, but be glad to obtain subsistence by hiring ourselves to rivet their chains on the necks of our fellow suffers. Our landholders, too...retaining indeed the title and stewardship of estates called theirs, but held really in trust for the treasury, must...be contented with penury, obscurity and exile.. private fortunes are destroyed by public as well as by private extravagance.
This is the tendency of all human governments. A departure from principle becomes a precedent for a second; that second for a third; and so on, till the bulk of society is reduced to mere automatons of misery, to have no sensibilities left but for sinning and suffering... And the fore horse of this frightful team is public debt. Taxation follows that, and in it's train wretchedness and oppression." Thomas Jefferson
PATRICK HENRY
"The great object is that every man be armed. Everyone who is able may have a gun."
"Are we at last brought to such humiliating and debasing degradation that we cannot be trusted with arms for our defense? Where is the difference between having our arms in possession and under our direction, and having them under the management of Congress? If our defense be the real object of having those arms, in whose hands can they be trusted with more propriety, or equal safety to us, as in our own hands?"
March 23, 1775:

What does the government have to apologize for? Did the Germans aplologize to the Jews? Did the Egyptians apologize to the Isralites? Did the English apologize to the indentured servants? Does the African Americans think they are special? What about the sharecroppers that worked for pennies? I say "Get a Life" already and quite teaching your children that the white honkys enslaved your race. Those people on both sides have been dead for a hundred plus years. Also, what about the black people in Africa that sold their own people to slavery and still doing it.
If the Government apologizes then the African American people will ask for compensation next. Hasn't WELFARE been enough? Personally, I'm sick of the whole mess. This from an over 40 white female that grew up in poverty wondering where my next meal may come from.

I for one am disgusted at raising the minimum wage. When will they get it? Raising the minimum wage kills small businesses and raises prices for us all! It is simple economics, if the cost of doing business goes up, prices go up. Once the wage goes up, they transfer all of the cost to me and you and they (minimum wage earners) are back in the same "feel sorry for me" mode. A minimum wage job is not meant to be a job for life, people! It is a job to hold you over while you go to school and/or looking at getting a better job. In a consumers perspective, 60% of minimum wage earners are not even worth what they were getting paid before the raise. I mean that there isn't any thought process to what you're doing, that is the reason for the minimum wage (minimum responsibility). If you are poor you have ample "money wasting" programs out there to pay for any sort of advanced learning you might want, to help pull you out of your minimum responsibility job. When the wage goes up it moves the no responsibility jobs closer to what I make and do. I have worked very hard with my own two hands to make a good living, and they don't have to do very much at all to get everything! Go to school, go find a better paying job, and make something of yourselves; rather than having everything handed to you. You can do it and yes there are better paying jobs out there for lesser experienced people. Go get' em and make your lives better for all of us!

Yesterday I received a 9x12 mailer from Senator McCain. In it was a picture of McCain and his missus and a three page letter with my name embedded in the text. In short, a relatively expensive mailing. As a life-long Democrat, I think someone in the Republican party is wasting a lot of money doing this type of spam mailing. Personally, I could care less because I'm getting quite used to the government in generally wasting my money. Facts and figures don't lie unless some politico puts a radical spin on them and the Republicans have handed the next administration the largest debt in our nations history. It will take a monumental effort to pull us out of this quagmire and the Republican Adminstration has shown it just can't do the job (or doesn't want to). Another administration like this and we're simply going down for the count.
Senator McCain says out Social Security is being paid by the young of America. I paid for my Social Security with 55 years of hard work. McCain collected over 23 thousand in 2007 in Social Secuity cash. If he thinks it's a disgrace, why don't he give it back?
Nope, it's time for a change, and Barack Obama is the only one I see who will be able to get us out of this mess.

Watching and listening to John McCain on the campaign trail, shadows that of a doddering old fool that is out of touch with a world. With his comments on the war, economy, healthcare and fuel prices, raises the question; “Which America does he live in, the America of the powerful and privileged, or the America that the rest of us live in?” He admits he doesn’t know anything about the economy, you know the very thing that collapsed the Soviet Union. He has no personal experience regarding healthcare, as tax dollars has been paying for his healthcare since the day he was born in a naval hospital. His only real calm is his military experience is Vietnam. It wasn’t his military superiority that elected him Senator, but the pity of being a POW.
Fear of terrorism is what re-elected George Bush, and John McCain is “Capitalizing” on the same fear to elect him. Can America survive 8 more years of foreign / corporate lobbying and the fleecing of the American people? I don’t think so. We need a president that protects America’s interest first, and the rest of the world’s investment into corporate America second. Allowing internal and external markets to take over our sovereign nation is the same as opening our doors to the enemy.

I am a Blogger based out of St. Louis. I am posting this question on different Blogs in about 23 States so as to Gauge if indeed it is time again for the People to Form a Continental Congress.
The Government is Growing at an enormous rate, much larger than the Founding Fathers ever intended. Individual Liberties and Freedoms have been under repeated attacks from the very Government sworn to protect them. The politicians in Office appear to only take turns playing "King" in the White House while Ignoring the Outcries of their Bosses, we Citizens.
Is it time to Elect Delegations from the States to Discuss how to Return this Great Country to the Path of the Constitution?
So that this Great Nation of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

Yes,
Raise gas prices and,
Here is a solution to Americas Energy Crisis.
1. Nationallize the oil companies. Been done before and can be done here!
2. Lower fuel prices to restore our economy and set up a schedule to raise them again over time slowly to a target figure and on a schedule we all know about.
3. Stop 90% of foreign AID, until our internal problems are fixed. This includes bringing our military home to secure our borders and provide us with security. No more being world police for our military.
4. Build huge solar plants in Americas deserts and other alternative fuel methods.
5. At the time 4 is being done build a national electric grid/ storage system to bring this solar energy to all regions of the country.
6. Require all cars and trucks to use hydrogen fuel by the time the National electrical grid is in place and operating.
7. Create a fair tax system.
I know this is possible. I have had a solared powered home since 1998. Scaling this up to provide the needed power for all of us is not only possible but easy. The American people are beign robbed at the gas pumps. Lets stop this and use these funds to fix our country.

I'm in the midst of another work spurt of to many days in a row. I want to go to Bayou LaBatre for the blessing of the fleet this Sunday, but no, I'll be at work here in Mount Vernon. I say no rest for the weary. I just came off an eight day stretch and now, another one of nine. I don't really mind, most of the time, but I do mind at times. When there are things that I want to do and I have to work I mind. I mostly mind that I have to get back to work at the other job after only two hours off from the other job. Twelve on, two off and then twelve off. The reason this is happening is because we are short handed around here. On both of the jobs I work we are short handed. And the drums constantly beat here of unemployment, no jobs, woe is all of us who can't find a job. I think the problem is these people are looking for jobs in the wrong places. They must be looking for jobs in the welfare que and not out in the world where the jobs are.

I for one would love to have all American soldiers back on home soil safe and sound but this is what they chose to do. I applaud and admire them and their families for the sacrficies they endure.
If anyone thinks that bringing the troops home in one fell swoop or a quick pull out back to the USA within a year or two is a good idea, think agian. Our current combatents, the insurgents, which are radical fundamentalists, are consumed for the most part in dealing with our and the emerging Iraqi troops and police which are growing in numbers and are being better trained for their future roles as peace keepers along with a more tried and dedictated central government.
They, the insurgents, are dealing with the threats on their own soil for now rather than threatening us directly for the most part.
If you think you are paying top dollar for gas now, Imagine if we were to pull out and leave the extremists to their own devices and they attack Kuwait or Saudi oil fields? Guess what you will be paying for gas assuming if you could find any at all. You think our economy is on the down turn now?
If you want either democrat in the White House, you may see the troops come home soon with the delight of many but don't be surprised if you see attacks at home surpassing 911 and the prices of gas, food and every commodity dependent on fuel to escalate to the point that the average person can't afford it.

Nothing about this election excites me. Maybe I've seen too many of them, voted in too many of them, and been disgusted with most of them. Nothing is new about this one. McCain is too old, Obama should be in the pulput and Hillary is spouting the same old Billisms. About the only thing that caused me to raise an interested eyebrow was when Ron Paul talked about the Fair Tax.
I've been a proponent of the Fair Tax for three or four years now. To me, it's the only thing that will actually work to get this floundering country out of debt. The biggest problem is people just don't get it and the ones who should get it simply won't take the time to investigate the facts. And forget the under forty crowd, most of them are too electronically wired to their ipods and cellphones to get anything, much less read anything intellectually enlightning.
I will, of course, trudge down to the polls and vote as I have for more decades than I care to mention now, but where to aim the dart this year is still up in the air which, all things considered, might just be a good place to aim it.

My husband is disabled. I am trying to get help to go back to college. I have never been in trouble with the law, yet sex offenders can get a pell grant while in a treatment center? Something is way wrong with this picture!!! I read this article last night and thought I would share it with everyone.
James Sturtz is not your ordinary college student struggling to pay tuition. The 48-year-old rapist is one of Iowa's most dangerous sex offenders, locked up in a state-run treatment center for fear he will attack again if released. Yet he has received thousands of dollars in federal aid to take college courses through the mail.
Across the nation, dozens of sexual predators have been taking higher education classes at taxpayer expense while confined by the courts to treatment centers. Critics say they are exploiting a loophole to receive Pell Grants, the nation's premier financial aid program for low-income students.
Prison inmates are ineligible for Pell Grants under a 1994 law. Students convicted of certain drug offenses are also ineligible. But sexual predators qualify once they are transferred from prison to treatment centers.
"This is the most insane waste of taxpayer money that I have seen in my eight years in Congress," said Rep. Ric Keller, R-Fla., who is pushing to stop the practice. "It is a national embarrassment that we are wasting taxpayer dollars for pedophiles and rapists to take college courses while hardworking young people from lower-class families are flipping hamburgers to pay for college."
Moreover, some institutions report that sex offenders are putting the financial aid to questionable uses by buying such things as clothes, a DVD player and music CDs — sometimes, after they have dropped out of school. Pell Grants can legally be put toward expenses that are education-related. But the unused portion of a grant is supposed to be repaid when someone withdraws from school.
Keller's plan would affect 20 states that allow authorities to hold violent sex offenders indefinitely after they have served their prison sentences. He predicted the measure would save taxpayers millions.
Some say taking away the financial aid for correpondence courses would be a mistake. They say education could help sex offenders build stable lives and reduce their chances of committing another crime if they are ever released.
The U.S. Education Department does not track how many sexual predators confined to treatment centers have received aid, in part because the offenders do not have to disclose their living arrangements on the application forms. But within the past five years, at least several dozen have received Pell Grants. And the department is only following the law.
"They are eligible," Education Department spokeswoman Stephanie Babyak said. She said the department generally does not track how recipients pay their expenses, "but if there is an issue with people getting overawards, we would look into that. We'll be happy to check it out."
The institutions and the government do not keep count of how much money sexual predators receive. The maximum Pell Grant is $4,310 per year. The government generally sends payments to colleges for tuition, and any leftover is sent to the student to cover expenses.
At the Sand Ridge Secure Treatment Center in Mauston, Wis., six patients are getting Pell Grants, and others did so in the past. Some patients used their grants for living expenses that were already being covered by the state's taxpayers, according to administrators.
"I think that the current practice — which results in large checks being sent to the patients for living expenses — is pretty much indefensible," director Steve Watters wrote in an e-mail to an aide last year.
In Iowa, 14 offenders in the Cherokee Mental Health Institute have received Pell Grants in recent years, said administrator Jason Smith. He said nine of them dropped courses after receiving money.
Some patients used their money to buy a DVD player, a television, a radio, music CDs and movies, Smith said. Because of vague guidelines, staff members could not determine whether those were inappropriate expenditures, he said.
In California, a number of predators living at the Coalinga State Hospital receive Pell Grants, said Department of Mental Health spokeswoman Nancy Kincaid. But she said the hospital has no way of tracking who gets them or how much money they receive.
Representatives of other states, including Kansas and Minnesota, said they could not recall sex offenders signing up for Pell Grants. Other states said they had no idea whether that was the case.
"They don't really tell us what they are doing. They have a lot of liberties they want to exercise without our oversight," said Dr. Henry Richards, superintendent of the Special Commitment Center in Washington state, where some patients take correspondence courses.
Keller introduced his bill to ban the practice after a newspaper reported in 2003 that 54 offenders at one Florida center got $200,000 in Pell Grants in one year.
Some Democratic members of Congress and others say it would be counterproductive to put up a barrier to education for sex offenders who are trying to rehabilitate themselves.
"These are people who we want to prepare to go into the communities. They need to have access to educational programs," Richards said. "I think the numbers of committed persons aren't so large they would significantly preclude other citizens from taking advantage of educational support. To preclude them seems mean-spirited to me."
Sturtz illustrates both sides.
The Iowa man was convicted in 1980 of sexually assaulting a 4-year-old girl. He earned his high school equivalency diploma behind bars and trained to be a janitor. He was convicted again in 1989 of attempted rape after pulling a knife on a woman.
After another stint behind bars, he struck again in 1994. This time, he met a Coe College student waiting for a bus, persuaded her to get in his car and raped her at knifepoint. He was sent back to prison and then ordered to Cherokee after his sentence ended in 2006.
Sturtz said he signed up to take business courses through Kirkwood Community College and received B's in business communication courses. But he has put his schooling on hold.
He said he dropped algebra and two other courses that were too hard. And he said he was unable to complete one class because he was not able to watch the required movies. Like other sexual predators, he is not allowed access to the Internet, and that has complicated his schooling.
He said he used his $100 in leftover grant money to buy jeans and underwear and saved the rest in case he tries to take more courses.
So far, none of the 72 predators in the Iowa center has been released since it opened in 1999. Sturtz admitted he is not ready for freedom anytime soon.
"It wasn't about the money for me, man. It was about the education," he said. "God knows I'm going to need all the help to get a job."
Is it me or do these predators deserve the right to get federal money when they don't have the right to vote any more?
Let's speak out about this issue!!!!
